Why does your home’s air conditioner freeze in the summer?

Your home’s central air conditioner works hard to keep you and your family cool during the hot summer months in Fort Myers. Unfortunately, it’s more likely than you might think for your air conditioner to become overworked, and actually restrict the airflow to your home. As hot as it may be outside, your air conditioner can actually become frozen. If this has happened to your air conditioner, don’t panic. Keep reading to find out why it has happened and if you should schedule air conditioner service to take care of the problem.

If your air conditioner ices over, the culprit is the evaporator coil within the condenser unit. There are two likely reasons the coil might freeze. First, the airflow through the coil is restricted. Your AC is trying to send more cold air through the coil than it can handle and therefore frost starts to accumulate on the system and slow the process even more. Eventually the frozen water could cause damage to the components of your AC.

If this is not the case, a frozen AC may be due to a low level of refrigerant. Similarly, if this is the case, there simply isn’t enough “juice” to properly move the air through the coil and the coil and the parts around it start to freeze up, giving your air conditioner a layer of ice and preventing your home from receiving the cool air it needs.

If your air conditioner has stopped working properly and has developed a layer of frost or ice, don’t worry. Follow these simple steps and your home will be feeling good again in no time.

  • Go to the thermostat and turn off your air conditioner totally.
  • Check other areas of your system through which air flows to make sure air is not restricted. Ensure your air filters are clean and all the registers and vents are free of debris.
  • Fort Myers has most experienced HVAC technicians at Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning, call now and set up your air conditioner service. Whether your air conditioner is low on refrigerant or the evaporator coil is restricted, this is a situation that should be addressed by AC experts.

Now find a good cool spot in front of the fan and wait for your technician to show up. They will be able to make a quick and accurate diagnosis of the specific problem with your AC and let you know what kind of air conditioner service you will need to fix the problem. Call Service Experts at 239-908-6991 today or go online to make your air conditioner service appointment now.
